Begin with your own idea.
Two bars. One melody. The other voices will carry it further.
Play your idea
Use the piano below, your computer keys, or a MIDI keyboard.
Computer keys:
Z / X change octave. Click “Play with computer keys” first; typing in a field stays normal.
Four beats to count in, then two bars to play. Hold for length; release for a rest.
Recording replaces the theme when you stop; Undo brings it back. Notes snap to half beats. Play one melody: a new note ends the previous one. Space stops a take.
Use a MIDI keyboard
Connect your keyboard, then allow MIDI access. Use C4–C6, or transpose into that range. If MIDI is unavailable, try Chrome or Edge; the on-screen piano and computer keys still work.
Refine your melody. Drag a note to move it; drag its right edge to change its length. Click empty space to add a note. Empty space is a rest.
On the grid: select a note, then use arrow keys to move it; Shift + left/right changes its length. Enter places, Delete removes. Undo: Ctrl/⌘ Z; redo: Ctrl/⌘ Shift Z. Moving into another note is blocked; placing a new note replaces notes it crosses. Use 2–16 notes from C4 to C6; a compact melody gives transformations more room. Key is not detected automatically: choose the key that matches your melody. Your opening pitches stay as written; later appearances may be transposed or inverted.
A theme. Infinite possibilities.
Preparing your first composition…
Give the voices room to speak.
Shape this interpretation
Subject handoffs, phrase dynamics, finger releases and a shared pedal. Opus and different clocks keep their exact pulse. Isolated theme and relationship previews use dry articulation; hear the full pedal context in the main player.
A chamber of real instruments.
Recorded bowed and plucked strings, woodwind sustains and short attacks. Natural phrasing selects articulations and alternate takes as the lines unfold. Stereo seating keeps each instrument in place.

Harmonic journey
Planned harmony guides accompanying voices. Fitted harmony describes material after it was composed; it was not imposed on those voices. Hear either in context, then inspect the finished notes.
